Television advertising is something that a lot of people find to be a nuisance. You might even just record your shows these days so that you can skip through all of the ads. If you look at things from the right perspective, you’ll see that TV advertising is actually quite interesting. The evolution and history of TV advertising is something that can provide a lot of entertainment and knowledge.

The Early Days of TV Ads

In the early days of television, advertising wasn’t anything like what it is now. Today, you’ll see commercials that are filmed to air during special breaks. In the past, people on the shows would actually do the commercials themselves. There would be a bit on the show where the star or someone else would essentially highlight a product and talk about it for a certain period of time.

The First Television Ads and Jingles

Eventually, companies did start to produce ads that were more tailored to the audiences. This led them to develop some of the early advertisement jingles that you might be familiar with. You might be familiar with jingles such as the Alka Seltzer “plop plop, fizz fizz” jingle that has become so recognizable. Even today, companies use jingles to help people recognize products or connect with certain brands.

Modern TV Commercial Production

Modern television commercial production is sometimes very complex, and the ads can be like small movies or shows in their own right. Some commercials are just simple and tell you the necessary information about a product, but most of them try to be entertaining enough to grab your attention. This could involve using mascot characters, celebrities, or just interesting or quirky storytelling that will keep you focused on what the ad is trying to tell you.

Big Data and Targeted Advertising

In modern times, big data is changing the way that television advertising works. Companies now have more information about demographics, and they use this information to try to place ads on shows where their desired audience will be watching. Targeted ads are also a big deal on streaming services, and companies are able to use algorithms to determine which ads might appeal to certain people. Advertising has come a long way from the host of a simple show telling people about a specific brand of cigarettes.
