In the past, sitcoms were ubiquitous, and everybody watched them all the time. Today, you don’t see quite as many of them on network television even though they’re still around. Reminisce and take a look at five of the most popular sitcoms of all-time.
- Seinfeld
Seinfeld sort of feels like the king of the sitcoms even today because of how relevant it still is. This show was absolutely massive throughout the 1990s, and it has managed to maintain its popularity over time. The show about nothing resonated with audiences and had so many memorable moments during its run. Jerry Seinfeld ended the show on his own terms when he could have easily stayed on and kept making millions due to fans wanting more.
- Friends
Friends was another gigantically popular sitcom back in the day, but it might be just as popular as ever right now. A new generation of people discovered the show through streaming services. Everything from the catchy intro music to the dramatic plotlines still makes audiences feel that sense of happiness. It’s a comfort show for millions of people, and that’s why it’s earned its place as one of the most popular sitcoms of all-time.
- The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Will Smith wasn’t yet a household name before starring in this classic 1990s sitcom, but he was famous as a rapper. This is the show that turned Will Smith into a huge star, and it’s so very good that it’s enjoyable to watch decades later. Everything from Uncle Phil throwing Jazz out of the house to Carlton’s silly dances is remembered fondly. The show also got serious sometimes and addressed issues such as racism and privilege.
- Family Matters
Family Matters is certainly an all-time great show that brought many families together. This starred a great cast of characters who interacted with each other so well. Officer Carl Winslow, his son Eddie, his daughter Laura, and their wacky neighbor Steve Urkel will always be remembered. It was definitely a silly show in many ways, but it had so many poignant moments as well. If you haven’t seen this one in quite some time, then it’d be good to go back and watch it again.
- Golden Girls
Golden Girls seems like it is somehow more popular now than it has ever been. It was definitely a loved show back when it was airing, but now millions of people have fallen in love with the four leading ladies of the show. Betty White, in particular, has a devoted following of people who love her performance on this show. It might surprise some to see this show on a list like this, but it won’t surprise any of its fans.
